Why do I need a mobile friendly website?
Mobile Friendly Design?
Do you get frustrated when you click on a Google search result on your mobile, only to find that you have to keep zooming in and out to find what you’re looking for? This usually happens when a website does not have responsive design.
To help combat this frustration Google have launched ‘mobile-friendly’ labels to their mobile SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page). When you search for a website on your mobile phone, let’s say Fluid Studios for example, you’ll notice a small light-grey label underneath the website URL highlighting whether a website is ‘mobile-friendly’ or not.
Why is responsive design important? It means that it is now more important than ever to have responsive design on your website, not only because users will be able to see instantly from their Google search whether your website is going to work on their phone (and they’re likely not to bother if it doesn’t). But also because Google is going to list ‘mobile-friendly’ websites higher on the result list i.e. if your website isn’t optimised for mobiles you may start to rank lower on Google.
How do I know if my website is mobile-friendly?Well it’s all down to GoogleBot and it will detect whether your website meets the following criteria:
- Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
- Uses text that is readable without zooming
- Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Not sure what any of this means? You can run your website through Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test and it will analyse for you whether your site meets their criteria.
